Chapter 157: Fa la la la la, la la la la

Chapter Cast (at the end of the chapter)

It was obvious to me that Felicity needed a mission, of sorts. Something on which to focus, something she could do to bring just a bit of positive into her day. Given her background and how she'd made it clear how much she enjoyed educating, I decided to speak with Amy and Bailey about bringing the woman to teach.

Granted, Mie and Poln were still North where I knew Gale would be taking care of their education, but there were others, such as Takino, in the South who should be part of that process.

Both Amy and Bailey were enthusiastic about the idea and Amy went to talk with Felicity immediately.

Kate had stayed in the same shelter with Felicity the night before, and it seemed that would be the way of things for a while. She also stayed close to her as they went about that morning's routine, and I hoped it was enough of a safety net to allow Felicity to start to heal.

For the next three days, work continued in the South much as it had for many months. We finished the water system upgrade and started on some of our other projects. All of the newcomers were slowly added to the chore and work schedules and each took to it reasonably well, without objections. There is something calming about having a task to perform, I think. Some short-term goal to seek. Each of them had suffered at the hands of Dunston, and each of them had a long road back to something like normal, and by keeping them busy on much-needed work, they were able to begin the process with less idle time to relive horrors.

Felicity worked with Amy on the educational process and even suggested improvements and methods which Amy incorporated immediately. She took on her first students, Takino and Abuella, on December 24, the day before Christmas. The kitten, Sanity, was usually around Felicity's feet, though often the white cat went out on her own, sometimes climbing the large tree near the fire pit to chase lizards or birds. I wondered how things would go once Mie and Poln came South again with Karana. That was an interaction which might be tricky if the dog's prey drive included going after little kittens.

Holidays were not of particular important on Phoenix. Other than those of us from predominantly Christian cultures, none of the Phoenicians held Christmas in any high regard. We had no plans to celebrate, though I admit it might have been something which would be good for all of us.

But there was a lot to do. There were more people to feed and shelter. More buildings to erect and repair. People suffering who needed support. It wasn't time to celebrate, not with the Southern Pacific Summer now upon us and the heat already becoming a consideration most days. The worst was still a month or two away, but we'd learned in the past that the hardest work in the South, especially, where the breeze was less consistent than up on the North ridge, could be made significantly less efficient when frequent breaks were needed to find cool shade and rehydrate.

We still had no contact with the Uhonamonans, and that worried me considerably. Despite trying to raise them on the radio during the scheduled times, as well as a few attempts other moments, we'd heard nothing from them. I was eager to learn what was happening with Progress United and the War. It was out of my hands, though, so other than being concerned, there was nothing else I could do.

It was a mild surprise that evening around supper time to see a group arrive from the North. Hunamu, Tila, Tika, Geeni, Kilba, and Kinnon walked out of the trees carrying heavy sacks of vegetables. Gale had been satisfied that afternoon with the progress in the North that she felt she could send the six back South to pick up the progress in the main camp, enough still North to continue the efforts and work the Summer fields.

Greetings all around, we introduced the survivors from the Humble Beginnings to those they had yet to meet and then shared a meal and joints and island wine. I could tell Hunamu was glad to be back with Popko and Takino, the three young men talking excitedly and sharing intimate touches and kisses.

Kinnon mostly kept to herself. She smiled when smiled at, and talked a little, but she seemed withdrawn. Unlike the other newcomers who had arrived with Ekoh, and those since, she had shed her clothes as soon as she arrived at the main camp.

I was eager to learn what was going on with her and asked her to walk with me down to the East after we ate.

“I'm giving them some space right now to work things out,” she told me.

“I'm glad they are talking finally,” I replied.

She offered a small smile, “Me as well. My heart still aches, wondering what this means for me, but it is the right thing to do right now. I can be patient.”

“Anything I can do to make it easier?”

Kinnon shrugged, “Not really.”

“You, uh... you aren't carrying your flask around,” I noted gently, “and you didn't drink with the rest of us earlier...”

“Five days,” Kinnon replied. “I've gone five days without. A very hard five days, Kal, but it's getting easier. Sort of.”

“I'm very proud of you,” I said, tentatively taking her hand.

“Thanks. I can't promise I won't step down off that wagon, but it is nice knowing I can do this, at least at times. Even with the heartache... I'm starting to enjoy being here, Kal. Slowly, this is starting to feel right for me.”

“Great. This place has that effect on people.”

“I've noticed. So, these new folks...”

“Yeah, some heartbreak there, as well.”

She stared ahead of us as we walked, hand-in-hand. “I might be able to help her, you know.”

“Felicity?”

Kinnon nodded. “What I deal with from my past... It's not the same, I know. Her... torture was unlike anything I could imagine. But at least I understand the self-hatred. The fear. The doubt. The what-ifs. Maybe... if you thought she would benefit, I can talk to her about it.”

“I think that might be good for both of you, but... know that she is still very raw right now. For two months, she was held against her will and he... abused her the whole time. Helping her is not something that will be easy. Kate has befriended her, staying with her so that she doesn't feel so threatened by the unknown which might happen, but she really could use someone to talk to who has... been through such horrors.”

“I'll talk to Kate first, then, and see where I might fit in.”

“Have you,” I said very gently, “told anyone but me?”

Kinnon shook her head. “No. Well, Nina knows, of course, but otherwise, no...”

“I've told no one.”

“Thank you. I think, perhaps... perhaps I am becoming ready to be more open. Now that I can help someone... maybe I need to talk to Felicity as much as she needs to talk to me. We'll see.”

We walked further East in silence, all the way to the edge of the beach. Staring out over the water, I watched the two boats there bobbing up and down slowly with the waves. The Humble Beginnings was still anchored near the camp. Ekoh had yet to find a way into the safe, and I was honestly worried about trying to move the boat given how precariously it had been slotted in through the shoals and shallows. The two boats to the East were dark silhouettes against the lightly-milky sky, starlight and moonlight reflecting off of high, thin clouds to give a little substance to the world below.

“Tomorrow's Christmas,” Kinnon said quietly.

“Yes.”

“No one celebrates here?”

I shrugged. “Not really. I don't know of any Christians currently on Phoenix. Perhaps some of the newcomers are, but they have not said so.”

“You don't believe?” she asked me with surprise.

I shook my head. “No. I'm an atheist.”

“Hmm.”

“What do you believe?” I asked.

“These days... I don't know. I believe in God, though what that means... I dunno. I was raised in Baptist traditions and maintained my beliefs throughout my life. I suppose I never really questioned them much. They just seem obvious.”

“Which parts are obvious?” I prodded lightly.

She looked at me thoughtfully, then replied, “That something powerful created all this. Created us. How could it be otherwise? What other force could find the two of us, standing here, at this moment, with this sky above us, this ocean at our feet? I find it difficult to believe there isn't something out there capable of doing that.”

I didn't really want to argue Kinnon out of her position, but I was also a man who was rather unwilling to give in to arguments I thought were flawed. “Perhaps some entity created things. Perhaps. But what is the evidence? I look around and I see rocks and sand and water, birds and fish. People. I see natural things brought about, over billions of years, by natural processes. How would you tell the difference between a world created by a God and one where incremental, natural steps led to what we see now?”

Kinnon stared out at the water. “I don't know. Like I said, it just sort of seems obvious.”

“But you have medical training. You surely understand science and how to test claims. Occam's razor insists that if we cannot determine which explanation is most likely true, we go with the one which requires the fewest assumptions. To me, the fewest assumptions are the ones which don't posit a supernatural deity which exists beyond the laws we can test, which cannot be explained within the reality we can experience.”

“And yet, from my point of view,” Kinnon explained, “the solution with the least assumptions is the one in which a creator God brought this forth. Do you know how unlikely it is that the eye could evolve? What are the odds?”

“Pretty good, actually,” I told her. “The eye has evolved at least a few dozen times on earth, independently of each other. Right now, out there,” I said, sweeping my arm in front of me, “there are creatures with all manners of eyes, from the simplest being single cells which can differentiate light from dark, to the amazingly-sharp ones in birds of prey. Each of those came about slowly through differential survival. I don't see the need to posit a creator to reach those points. If you think of the time involved, and the tiny steps which brought small advantages, you can get many different sorts of eyes which appear complex but are really a kludge of everything which came before.”

Kinnon replied, “But don't you see the intelligence behind such things? How easy it is to lay down a process which results in eyes of birds and humans?”

I chuckled. “Human eyes are hardly intelligently designed. They are quite faulty, really. There are much better eyes out there. Human eyes are upside down, and the way the optic nerve is positioned could be improved on in a dozen different ways. And consider some of the incredibly odd ways parts of the human body are constructed. I'm sure you're well aware of the way the laryngeal nerve takes a rather long detour around the heart before heading back up. Not exactly a very efficient means of connecting the end points. And the vas deferens? Another piece of sub-optimal engineering. There are countless other pieces which suggest, at best, a mediocre designer. All of this is better explained by evolution working with existing structures and with small changes which present advantages. The end result, like I said, is a kludge.”

Kinnon smiled. “Perhaps. I'm not sure that changes my belief that there is a God.”

“But at least you know, personally, how things are put together inside a body. You've seen it first hand. You know that someone designing an efficient body could do better.”

“True. But that's not really an important part of my belief.”

“So what is?” I asked.

She took a long breath and then replied, “I guess I need to know that, out there somewhere, there is someone who has a hand on the tiller, Kal. I don't like thinking that this is all random and pointless. I need to know that there is meaning behind things I don't understand.”

“Fair enough. I'm not trying to dissuade you from your belief. But you said you were a Christian, or at least brought up Christian. There are specific claims which come along with that. You know, the whole Jesus-is-God business. Sin. Salvation. That sort of thing. Bible as divine word, more or less.”

She nodded. “I accept that Jesus died for me. And for others. And I need to believe, Kal, that those who cause suffering get what they deserve eventually.”

“But isn't the core tenant of Christianity exactly the opposite?” I asked.

“What do you mean?”

“The ultimate get-out-of-jail-free card. Paul told Christians that all they had to do was believe that Jesus was savior. To have faith in God. That sins are washed away by accepting that sacrifice. No matter what you did, you could join God in Heaven simply by asking for forgiveness and believing in Jesus. Sinners become saints in the blink of an eye. There's no karma in that system. There's no just punishment or reward. There's just blind faith.”

Kinnon squeezed my hand a couple of times and I waited for her to respond.

“I never really thought about it like that.”

“Few do.”

“I don't want this to be a troubling moment, Kinnon. I really don't. Things are starting to go the right way for you now, relatively speaking. I didn't mean to bring on an existential downer.”

“No... no, this is fine,” she assured me. “The time has come for me to reexamine other parts of my life and I've done so. Continue to do so. This one... I'll think on it more. Thank you for caring enough to talk about it honestly.”

I put my arm around her and kissed her cheek. “Shall we head back?”

“Sure,” Kinnon replied. “Can we at least sing some Christmas carols tomorrow? I'd really like that.”

“Absolutely. Been a while since we've broken out in song. I think many of us would rather enjoy that.”

- - -

With all of the little ones in our shelter, both in our bed and in the crib nearby, it was all but impossible to enjoy the spontaneous intimate moments we'd shared before. A year earlier, when I slipped into bed next to my wives late in the night, I'd have been more likely than not to soon slide myself into a wet, willing vagina or, occasionally, a tight ass. These days, though, with Katie in the bed between Bailey and Amy, Azure sleeping on the latter's breasts, it wasn't even a consideration to do more than cuddle next to Keekah as she slept.

I missed those moments, to be sure, but I wasn't regretting what had changed. The children were a joy each day. Sure, there were challenges and small things to overcome, but I loved having them in my life, and I knew that Keekah, Amy, and Bailey felt the same way. With Kate sleeping in with Felicity the past few days, there was a bit more room on the mattresses. But I still enjoyed spooning with Keekah, wrapping an arm over her milk-filled breasts, and falling asleep.

- - -

Even though we had no formal celebration for Christmas, we did take the time to eat a robust meal together while Kinnon led us in carols. Most people did not know the words, so she had fun teaching the songs. First it was White Christmas, which was quite ironic given it was Summer in the Pacific and we'd likely never see snow on Phoenix. She followed that with Silver Bells and then Deck the Halls, the latter enjoyed by everyone since they could easily join in singing 'Fa-la-la-la-la la-la la la.'

I taught them the John Lennon and Yoko Ono song Happy Xmas which had a rather melancholy tone to it, and Kate offered up Santa Claus is Coming to Town. There were others, as well, and it was nice to join together for just a while and share some comradery. We needed more moments like that. We'd been so focused on work and worries that we'd neglected to find time, even if just for a few minutes here and there, to have fun. It was understandable that we prioritized our survival, but we'd had moments of bonding like that often when the Hahonokoans had first arrived and it went a long ways towards helping us grow comfortable together, and that one evening, singing Christmas songs, felt the same with the newcomers.

And we danced, as well. A few of our make-shift drums were brought out and we shuffled around the fire pit in ones and twos and threes, some twirling, some jiving, others moving to rhythms too irregular to describe. Even newcomers, each one of them, took part, including Felicity. I heard her laugh throughout the night, and none of the darkness which had been there days before was in her tone. I new the darkness was just below the surface, but it was heartening to see her be able to feel merry, even if only for an evening.

Slowly, we broke away to take care of the end-of-night chores, and to bathe in the surf or the bath house. Other than Kinnon, none of those new to Phoenix were willing to go without clothing or even to shed them without being removed from the view of others, either in the privacy of the bath house or the darkness of moving far enough from the fire pit.

When I returned to the shelter after cleaning up for the night, I found Amy and Bailey kissing and fingering each other. Quite a sight, to be sure! I didn't know where Keekah and the children had gone, but I simply stood in the doorway, watching the shadows from a couple of candles play against the two lovely young women who were making love. Soft sighs, desirous growls, pleasant moans all met my ears. I almost didn't want to interrupt them.

Amy saw me, though and smiled, motioning me over, her legs spreading, Bailey's fingers soon parting Amy's labia and offering me a wonderful view of the teen's vagina. I knelt down while they kissed again, licking between Bailey's fingers along Amy's smooth, red flesh, tasting her desire, her arousal. The flesh was salty and warm on my tongue, Amy's pussy still somewhat stretched from childbirth. I slid my tongue around her vulva, licking both Amy's cunt and Bailey's fingers which were coated in the new mother's pungent juices.

Bailey started to slide her fingers around our lover's clit. Amy's ass rose against us, my tongue darting down to lick her asshole, teasing the tight opening's rough flesh before lapping against the girl's labia. She started to cum, arching her back, moaning into Bailey's mouth. Her legs clamped tight and forced me from her crotch as she climaxed. I licked my lips, enjoying the flavors from Amy's snatch.

Bailey parted Amy's legs again, looking at me, "Put your cock in there, Kal," she said with a smile, "I want to watch you fuck her."

I was very happy to do so, sliding between Amy's thighs and pushing the tip of my hard cock into the teen's wet, slippery hole. Amy moaned again as I penetrated her, her arms rising to my shoulders as I moved over her fully, Bailey's hands caressing Amy's milk-laden breasts. She squeezed them gently as I stroked myself in and out of Amy's pussy, small drops of thin, white juice trickling out and running over Amy's stomach and Bailey's fingers. I watched as Bailey licked the milk from her hand, then pushed her head under me to suck directly on Amy's tits.

My cock was starting to swell but I managed to hold off my orgasm, enjoying the way Amy's body writhed under me. She kept whispering, "Oh, Kal..." between moans. Her labia trailed down my shaft each time I pulled back, and I felt it wrap inward with each stroke back inside. Bailey rose and pushed her lips to mine, sharing with me the warm milk from Amy's breasts which she still held in her mouth. I loved that moment so much.

After Amy came again, I pulled out of her and pushed Bailey back, quickly plunging my cock into the fifteen-year old's lovely, hairy pussy. Amy laid next to us, kissing Bailey and massaging her breasts. I was getting closer and closer, not sure I could hold off much longer.

What set me off was Amy turning fully onto her side next to us, then cupping one of her breasts and squeezing. Milk shot out in a quick stream, splashing down over Bailey's Mons Venus and my groin, mixing with the juices already coating my cock and Bailey's vulva. Amy did it again, and I lost my control. I trembled into orgasm as Amy's milk surely mixed with my cum inside Bailey's vagina. Bailey came just seconds later, no contact with her clitoris needed. I emptied myself into her completely, then rested on my elbows, swapping kisses with Bailey and Amy and trying to catch my breath.

I rolled away and offered each a clean towel to wipe up. They were soon curled up together, spooning, clearly very sleepy. I asked after Keekah and the children, and Amy told me that Keekah had offered to take them for the night so that the three of us could enjoy ourselves. Keekah had added that she was eager to rejoin our fun very soon.

I wasn't quite ready for sleep, so before turning in for the night, I kissed them again and then stepped out to smoke a joint.

Kate was sitting on the short porch of one of the other shelters nearby. She motioned me over and I asked, "Felicity?"

"She's moving her bowels," Kate said, pointing to the East.

"Ah." I sat beside her and she leaned against my shoulder. "Has, uh... has Kinnon come to speak to you yet about Felicity?"

"Yes, earlier."

"And she told you... about her past?"

"She did," Kate replied, "seems she and Felicity have something in common, unfortunately."

"Yeah." I sucked hard on the joint and the leaf-paper crackled and popped. "But maybe they can support each other, you know?"

"I think that might be so," Kate said. "I haven't talked to Felicity about it yet. She just met Kinnon yesterday. And then, only briefly."

"How's Felicity doing today? She seemed to be able to enjoy the dancing and singing."

"I think she did. She still has some serious lows throughout the day. She cries a lot, and she doesn't want anyone to know that, but... I think it helps that I'm around her. She's opening up a lot. Telling me... details... horrible things, Kal. I don't want to repeat them... but I think it is helping her to tell someone."

I nodded but didn't respond to the point. Instead, I asked, "Where's her cat?"

"Oh, she's around. Just saw her a moment ago. Cute little girl."

"Yeah. I always liked cats."

"You never wanted us to get one, remember?" Kate said, eyes narrowed.

"I know. I liked to travel too much. I'd have felt guilty going off for a few months, somewhere a cat couldn't go. Think it would have been possible to go stay in Kenya with cat for six weeks like we did that year? By the time we'd have come back, the cat would really have been someone else's."

"True."

I checked to see if Felicity was yet returning, then said, "I really hope that Felicity never has to come running up to you saying 'I've lost my Sanity!'"

Kate shook her head. "Eww. That was terrible. And too soon, Kal." She chuckled anyway.

"Sorry."

Seconds later I saw a figure moving our way and Felicity soon came into view. "Hello, Kal. You're up late, I suppose."

"About to turn in."

She sat on Kate's other side and stared out into the night's darkness, the sounds of tree frogs and leaves shuffling in the light breeze behind us. Sanity came bounding up a moment later and started scratching on the bottom step of the shelter. Felicity scooped her up and tickled her tummy before stroking her neck and back. The cat purred loudly and relaxed against Felicity's chest.

Not knowing what else to say and finally feeling sleepy, I turned and kissed Kate, then said, "Good night," to Felicity.

"Night, Kal. And... thanks for letting me borrow your wife. She's been a good friend these past few days..."

I smiled, "No thanks necessary. Kate's as good a friend as I've ever known."

Felicity grinned. "It's almost like I have my own naked personal assistant."

"Just don't expect me to do your laundry," Kate replied with a grin, "but I'll show you where to do that tomorrow. You have to be about out of clothes."

Felicity nodded. "I am... I'm out of panties, so I've had to go without today. I only remembered when I squatted down to go." She glanced at me, looked briefly horrified, then blushed, looking away. "Sorry, forgot you were still here, Kal..."

Kate chuckled. "Don't worry. This man has seen and heard most everything." I was thankful she didn't make a sexual joke at that point. It would have been out of place given Felicity's recent past. That was our sort of humor, so I sort of expected it anyway.

"I bet he has," Felicity said, smiling. Then her voice firmed up, more commanding. "Regardless, thanks, Kal. Good night."

It sort of felt like a dismissal, and I took it as such. Baby steps, I knew, were the key. Felicity was getting there, minute by minute. But we were still weeks and months away from something approaching 'okay,' and I knew not to take her tone personally. I kissed Kate again and headed back to the shelter, sliding in beside Amy. She moaned lightly, turning onto her side, and settled her ass against me, falling back asleep before I could settle my head on the pillow.
